GUAVA (Amrood, Peyara, Jaam )

It is a fruit of the genus Psidium (family Myrtaceae). The common guava is a large shrub or small tree with quadrangular branchlets, oval to oblong leaves about 7.6 centimetres (3 inches) in length and four-petalled white flowers about 2.5 centimetres broad. The fruits are round to pear shaped and measure up to 7.6 centimetres in diameter; the white to salmon-red pulp contain many such hard seeds.
Guavas are processed into jams, jellies and preserves. Fresh guavas are rich in vitamins A, B and C; they are eaten raw or sliced and served with sugar and cream as a dessert. It is highly effective in removing constipation. It is commonly called 'Indian Apple'.
Benefit and uses of Guava.

The best way to prevent headaches is to build up physical resistance through proper nutrition, physical exercise and positive thinking. As a first step, the patient should undertake a short fast, and take citrus fruit juices diluted with water every two hours from 8.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. daily. Thereafter, he should plan his diet in such a way as to put the least possible strain on the digestion. Breakfast may consist of fruits, both fresh and dried. Lunch may consist of protein foods. Starchy foods such as wholewheat bread, cereals, rice, or potatoes should be taken at dinner along with raw salads. Spices, condiments, sour buttermilk, and oily foodstuffs should be avoided. Drinking a glass of water (warm water in winter and cool water in summer), mixed with a teaspoon of honey first thing in the morning, is also a good remedy. Copious drinking of water throughout the day is also advised.

Other helpful measures in the treatment of headaches are a cleansing enema with water temperature at 37 degree C, a cold throat pack, frequent applications of towels wrung out from very hot water to the back of the neck , a cold compress at 4.4 degree C to 15.6 degree C applied to the head and face, or an alternate spinal compress. Hot fomentations over the abdominal region just before retiring relieve headaches caused by stomach and liver upsets.
Hot foot bath
Hot foot baths are also beneficial in the treatment of chronic headaches. The patient should keep his legs in a tub or bucket filled with hot water at a temperature of 40 degree C to 45 degree C for fifteen minutes every night before retiring. This treatment should be continued for two or three weeks.
Yogasanas
Yogic kriyas like jalneti and kunjal; pranayamas like anulomaviloma, shitali and sitkari; and asanas such as uttanpadasana, sarvangasana, paschimottanasana, halasana, and shavasana are also beneficial in the treatment of headaches.

GASTRITIS

Gastritis is an inflammation of the lining of the stomach. The inflammatory lesions may be either acute or chronic.

Home remedies for Gastritis
Onion taken along with curd is a great remedy for gastritis
Cardamom fruit along with clove fruit taken thrice a day will give good results
Mulethi (Glycyrrhiza glabra) powder mixed with honey and ghee (not in equal quantity) is advisable in gastritis
White jeera (cumin seed) taken with jaggery or honey is useful
Orange juice along with roasted jeera (cumin seed) and rock salt is very helpful
Ginger juice is also very effective in gastritis.
Juice of dhania leaves (Coriander sativum) gives good results in gastritis treatment.
Gastritis treatment using Coconut
Coconut water is an excellent remedy for gastritis. It gives the stomach the necessary rest and provides vitamins and minerals. The stomach is greatly helped in returning to a normal condition if nothing but coconut water is given during the first twenty-four hours.
Gastritis treatment using Rice
Rice gruel is another excellent remedy for acute cases of gastritis. One cup of rice gruel is recommended twice daily. In chronic cases where the flow of gastric juice is meagre, such foods as require prolonged vigorous mastication are beneficial as they induce a greater flow of gastric juice.
Gastritis treatment using Potato
Potato juice has been found valuable in relieving gastritis. The recommended dose is half a cup of the juice, two or three times daily, half an hour before meals.
Gastritis treatment using Marigold
The herb marigold is also considered beneficial in the treatment of gastritis. An infusion of the herb in doses of a tablespoon may be taken twice daily.

NOTE: To get the most benefit from eye drops, gently pull out your lower lid and let the liquid drop into the eye pocket. Then keep your eyes closed for about two minutes after putting in the drops. This will prevent the blinking process from pumping the drops out of your eyes.
For five minutes each day, massage the base of the index and middle (second and third) fingers, as well as the webs between those fingers. The right hand helps the right eye and the left hand helps the left eye.

MANGO SASAV

Sasav meaning, 'mustard seeds' in Konkani, is the main flavouring ingredients for this tantalizing sweet and sour mango dish. Traditionally, small, whole mangoes are used. You may, however, use diced mangoes (like I have done) if you prefer.Cooking Time : 10 mins.Preparation Time : 10 mins.Serves 4.
Ingredients
2 cup ripe mangoes, peeled and diced
1 cup fresh coconut, grated
1 teaspoon mustard seeds ( rai)
¼ teaspoon turmeric powder (haldi)
1½ teaspoons chilli powder
1½ teaspoons tamarind (imli) pulp
7 to 8 black peppercorns
2 teaspoons jaggery ( gur)
salt to taste
Method
1.
Dry roast the mustard seeds in a pan till they crackle.
2.
Grind together all the ingredients except the mango pieces with ½ cup water to make a paste.
3.
Pour the mixture into a pan and bring to a boil.
4.
Add the jaggery, salt and mango pieces and simmer for 2 minutes.
5.
Serve hot with steamed rice.

TANDOORI GOBI

Succulent pieces of cauliflower marinated in tandoori spices. You can marinate chunks of paneer, mushrooms, or even boiled potatoes to make interesting variations. Serve these with toothpicks to make a conversation starter or with rotis or parathas to make a quick working lunch.Preparation Time : 20 mins.Cooking Time : 20 mins.Serves 4.
Ingredients
2 cups cauliflower florets, parboiled
½ teaspoon cumin seeds ( jeera)
1 cup onions, sliced
1 cup capsicum, sliced
salt to taste
1 teaspoon oil
To be mixed into a marinade
½ cup curds, beaten
1 teaspoon Bengal gram flour (besan)
1 teaspoon ginger paste
2 teaspoons garlic paste
1 teaspoon chilli powder
½ teaspoon kasoori methi (dried fenugreek leaves)
salt to taste
For the garnish
1 tablespoon chopped coriander
Method
1.
Marinate the cauliflower florets in the prepared marinade for approximately 15 minutes.
2.
Heat the oil and add the cumin seeds. When they crackle, add the onions and capsicum and sauté till they are translucent.
3.
Add the cauliflower along with the marinade and sauté for 10 to 12 minutes till the cauliflower is cooked.
4.
Adjust the salt and serve hot, garnished with the coriander.

Ingredients
1 recipe cooked biryani rice
¾ cup whole masoor (red lentils)
¼ cup chopped onions
¾ cup chopped tomatoes
¼ teaspoon saffron (kesar), dissolved in ¼ cup low fat milk
2 tablespoons low fat milk
2 teaspoons oil
Salt to taste
To be ground into a paste
4 cloves garlic
3 teaspoons coriander (dhania) seeds
1½ teaspoons cumin seeds (jeera)
4 teaspoons poppy seeds (khus-khus)
25 mm. (1") piece ginger
1 bay leaf ( tejpatta)
1 cardamom (elaichi)
Salt to taste
Other ingredients
1 teaspoon oil for greasing
2 tablespoons chopped coriander for the garnish
For the cooked biryani rice
1.
Clean and wash the rice. Soak the rice for approx. 15 minutes. Drain and keep aside.
2.
In a large pan, boil 3 cups of water with clove, cinnamon, bay leaf, cardamom and salt and then add the rice. Cover and cooked the rice. Drain and keep aside.
How to proceed
1.
Soak the masoor in water for at least 6 hours. Drain and keep aside.
2.
Heat the oil in a non-stick pan and cook the onions till they turn translucent.
3.
Add the ground paste, fry for a few minutes and then add the tomatoes.
4.
Fry for two more minutes. Add the soaked masoor, salt and ¾ cup of water.
5.
Cook on a low flame till the masoor is tender and most of the water has evaporated. Keep aside.
6.
To the cooked biryani rice, add the saffron milk and mix lightly. Keep aside.
7.
Grease a large baking dish and put 2 tablespoons of low fat milk at bottom. Make five layers by spreading 1/3 of the rice, then spreading ½ the masoor, next spreading 1/3 of the rice and finally the remaining masoor and another layer of rice.
8.
Cover with an aluminium foil and bake in a pre-heated oven at 200°C (400°F) for 20 minutes. Turn upside down on a large serving plate just before serving.
9.
Serve hot garnished with coriander.

SOYABEAN BIRYANI

A nutri-packed biryani! Soyabeans are one of the healthiest pulses for a vegetarian diet as apart form other nutrients, they also abound in vitamin B12 which is otherwise lacking in other vegetarian foods. I have added three parts of vegetables to make the glycemic index of this dish lower. You will surely relish the spicy flavours of the masala mixture in this recipe. The is a good dish for a packed lunch to take to work that will satiate you and keep you going for a longer period.Baking Temperature : 180°C (360°F). Baking Time : 30 mins.Preparation Time : 20 mins.Cooking Time : 1/2 hour.Serves 4.
Ingredients
½ cup soyabeans, soaked overnight
1 cup cooked rice
1 stick cinnamon (dalchini)
1 cardamom (elaichi)
1 bay leaf
salt to taste
For the masala mixture
½ cup onions, sliced
½ teaspoon cumin seeds (jeera)
1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
1 cup tomatoes, chopped
½ teaspoon turmeric powder (haldi)
½ teaspoon chilli powder
½ teaspoon coriander (dhania) powder
¼ cup low fat milk / low fat curds
1½ cups mixed boiled vegetables ( peas, french beans, cauliflower)
¼ cup mint, chopped
¼ cup chopped coriander
1 teaspoon oil
salt to taste
Method
1.
Wash and drain the soyabeans. Add approx. 2 cups of water and the cinnamon, cardamom, bay leaf and salt and cook over a medium flame till they are cooked. Drain and keep aside.
2.
Combine the cooked rice and soyabeans.
For the masala mixture
1.
Heat the oil in a non-stick pan and add the cumin seeds.
2.
When they crackle, add the onions and ginger-garlic paste and sauté till the onions are lightly browned.
3.
Add the tomatoes, turmeric powder, chilli powder, coriander powder and ¼ cup of water and cook till the water evaporates and the tomatoes are soft.
4.
Add the milk, salt and boiled vegetables and mix well. Simmer for 5 to 7 minutes till the mixture is semi dry. Then add the coriander and mint leaves.
How to proceed
1.
Spread half the rice and soya beans in a 200 mm. (8") diameter baking dish and spoon all the masala mixture on top.
2.
Top with the remaining rice and soya beans and cover with aluminum foil.
3.
Bake in a pre-heated oven at 180°C (360°F) for 20 to 30 minutes.
4.
Serve hot, with low fat curds.

KABULI CHANA BIRYANI

½ cup kabuli chana (chick peas)
1 teaspoon ginger paste
1 teaspoon garlic paste
1 teaspoon red chilli powder
½ teaspoon turmeric powder (haldi)
1 cup fresh low fat curds (dahi)
¾ cup chopped tomatoes
1 cup peeled and chopped potatoes
1½ teaspoons finely chopped green chillies
1 tablespoon oil
Salt to taste
For the kabuli chana gravy
1.
Soak the kabuli chana overnight. Boil with a little water the next day. Drain.
2.
Heat the oil in a non-stick pan, add the ginger and garlic pastes and fry for a while.
3.
Add the red chilli powder, turmeric powder and 2 teaspoons of water and fry for 1 minute.
4.
Add the curds, tomatoes, potatoes and green chillies and stir for a while.
5.
Add the cooked kabuli chana and salt and mix well. Keep aside.
How to proceed
1.
To the cooked biryani rice, add the coriander, mint, green chillies and saffron milk. Keep aside.
2.
Grease a large baking dish. Make 5 layers by spreading 1/3of the rice, then spreading ½ the kabuli chana gravy, next spreading 1/3of the rice and finally the remaining kabuli chana gravy and another layer of rice.
3.
Cover with an aluminium foil and bake in a pre-heated oven at 200°C (400°F) for 20 minutes. Serve hot.

PIMPLES

Pimples are serious adolescence problem of the skin. They appear on the cheeks, forehead and nose and spoil looks. Pimples are almost developed in young adults and teenagers due to the inflammation of skin. The acne home remedies listed below have worked for many people, but they may not work for some people. Pimples can be removed by taking enough vitamins, calcium, fruits etc. Try out these home remedies to cure pimples.
Pimples Home Remedies
Mix 1 tablespoon groundnut oil with 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice to prevent formation of blackheads and pimples.

Another overnight home remedy for zapping a zit is to put a dab of toothpaste on it to help dry it out. You may need to test this on a short-term basis to make sure it doesn't irritate your pimple. Calamine lotion will have the same drying effect.

A few handy tips for those who suffer from pimple 'attacks'. Drink plenty of water and vegetable or fruit juices. Use cucumber or other fruit and vegetable packs to cure pimple scars. Maintain a diet that is rich in cottage cheese, fish and yoghurt. These help to cleanse your system and ward off pimples.
Pimples treatment using Zinc
Another useful remedy for acne and pimples is zinc. It should be taken in a dose of 50 mg daily for a month to reduce pimples. Then you can reduce the dose if noticeable improvements are seen on your skin.

Apply a paste of fresh fenugreek (methi) leaves in water over the face every night and washed with warm water in the morning for preventing pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, dryness, and wrinkles.

Make a paste of ground orange peel with water and apply on the affected area. Wash it off after 20-30 minutes with lukewarm water.

Make a paste of salt in vinegar. Rub it on the pimples. Wash it off after 20-30 minutes with lukewarm water.

Make a paste of turmeric powder in mint juice. Apply on affected area. Wash it off after 20-30 minutes with lukewarm water.

Drinking of wheatgrass juice may remove acne.
How to reduce pimples:

What is hepatitis B?
Hepatitis B is a virus that infects the liver. Most adults who get hepatitis B have it for a short time and then get better. This is called acute hepatitis B.

You can have hepatitis B and not know it. You may not have symptoms. If you do, they can make you feel like you have the flu. But as long as you have the virus, you can spread it to others.

Sometimes the virus does not go away. This is called chronic hepatitis B. Over time, it can damage your liver. Babies and young children infected with the virus are more likely to get chronic hepatitis B.
What causes hepatitis B?
Hepatitis B is caused by the hepatitis B virus. It is spread through contact with the blood and body fluids of an infected person. Hepatitis B is one of the most easily spread (contagious) forms of viral hepatitis, which includes hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E. However, hepatitis has many other causes, including some medications, long-term alcohol use, fatty deposits in the liver, and exposure to certain industrial chemicals.
How HBV is spread=
HBV is spread when blood, semen, or vaginal fluids (including menstrual blood) from an infected person enter another person's body, usually in one of the following ways:
Sexual contact. The hepatitis B virus can enter the body through a break in the lining of the rectum, vagina, urethra, or mouth. Sexual contact is the most important risk factor for the spread of HBV in North America.
Sharing needles. People who share needles and other equipment (such as cotton, spoons, and water) used for injecting illegal drugs may inject HBV-infected blood into their veins.
Work-related exposure. People who handle blood or instruments used to draw blood may become infected with the virus. Health care workers are at risk of becoming infected with the virus if they are accidentally stuck with a used needle or other sharp instrument infected with an infected person's blood, or if blood splashes onto an exposed surface, such as the eyes, mouth, or a cut in the skin.
Childbirth. A newborn baby can get the virus from his or her mother during delivery when the baby comes in contact with the mother's body fluids in the birth canal (perinatal transmission) . However, breast-feeding does not transmit the virus from a woman with HBV to her child.

Contagious and incubation periods
Symptoms appear an average of 60 to 90 days (although they can appear 45 to 180 days) after you have contact with the hepatitis B virus (incubation period). Blood, semen, and vaginal fluids (including menstrual blood), whether fresh or dried, are highly contagious (HBV can be easily spread) during this period and for several weeks after the onset of symptoms.
Blood contains the highest quantities of the hepatitis B virus.
Blood and other body fluids that contain the virus can remain contagious for at least a week and possibly much longer, even if they are dried.
If you have a short-term HBV (acute) infection, you usually cannot spread the virus after antibodies against the surface antigen of HBV appear. This generally takes several weeks. If you have a long-term (chronic) HBV infection, you are able to spread the virus as long as the condition lasts.

What are the symptoms?

Your health professional will diagnose hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection based on a physical examination, your medical history, and blood tests. You will be asked questions about risk factors for hepatitis B (such as about your job or sexual activity) and about factors that could make the disease worse (such as your alcohol use or family history of liver cancer).

If your health professional thinks you have been exposed to or are infected with the virus, you will need tests to find out more about your condition.

Hepatitis blood tests include:
Hepatitis B antigens and antibodies, which help determine whether you are or were once infected with HBV, whether you have been immunized, whether you have long-term (chronic) HBV infection, and whether you can pass the virus to others (contagious) .
Hepatitis B viral DNA (HBV DNA), which detects genetic material (DNA) from the hepatitis B virus. HBV DNA indicates that the virus is multiplying in your body (active) and that it is contagious.
Tests that determine whether the hepatitis A, hepatitis C, or Epstein-Barr (which causes infectious mononucleosis, or "mono") viruses are causing your hepatitis if the results of your tests show that HBV is not multiplying in your body.
Tests that determine the cause of liver inflammation if it is not a viral cause.
Tests that determine whether you are infected with hepatitis D along with hepatitis B.
Liver tests include:
Bilirubin, albumin, and prothrombin time, which help determine how well your liver is functioning. Cholesterol testing also may be done.
Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase, and lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), which help determine whether your liver is damaged or inflamed. These tests measure enzymes. However, these tests alone are not a reliable way to confirm a diagnosis of hepatitis B. Additional tests usually are needed.
Tests may be done if you have chronic HBV infection and are considering antiviral treatment. These tests also may be used to determine whether treatment has been helpful in controlling liver damage caused by chronic HBV infection. They include:
Diagnostic imaging.
Abdominal ultrasound
CT scan
MRI (may be used in rare cases)
Removing a tissue sample from the liver (liver biopsy).
If you have chronic hepatitis B, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that you be vaccinated for hepatitis A if you have not been vaccinated or are not immune to this disease.

If you are at risk for liver cancer, an alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) test may be done. If the AFP level is elevated, it may indicate liver cancer.

If you have chronic HBV infection, you will need to visit your health professional regularly. He or she will do blood tests to monitor your liver function and the activity of the hepatitis B virus in your body. Some of the tests can tell your health professional whether HBV is actively multiplying in your liver, which increases your risk for chronic hepatitis. Chronic hepatitis can lead to cirrhosis or liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma).

The CDC recommends that all pregnant women have the hepatitis B surface antigen test. This test also may be repeated later in the pregnancy if a woman is at high risk for infection.

People who were once exposed to the hepatitis B virus, especially people who moved to the United States from a country where the virus is common, often develop lifelong protection (immunity) against HBV and do not need to be vaccinated. However, people from countries where HBV infection is common may carry the virus and should be screened for the virus.

You can be screened for hepatitis B before getting vaccinated. However, keep in mind that:
Hepatitis B vaccination may cost less than screening. Screening costs include the cost of a health professional visit and laboratory tests. If antibodies against HBV are not found, you will have to pay for the full vaccination series (three shots given at different times), including the cost of additional office visits.
You can receive the hepatitis B vaccine even if you already have antibodies against HBV in your bloodstream, and no harm will result.

Treatment of hepatitis B viral (HBV) infection depends on how active the virus is and whether you are at risk for liver damage such as cirrhosis. LEMON

Botanically it is called Citrus acid. It is a small tree or spreading bush of the rue family (Rutaceae). The lemon forms a spreading bush or a small tree 10 to 20 feet high if not trained or pruned. Mix 1/8 teaspoon of powdered gotu kola into a cup of herbal tea or add it to plain hot water along with 1/8 teaspoon of ginseng and a pinch of cayenne. This home remedy should clear the spots in a few days.
Prepare a mixture by adding one teaspoon grated horseradish root, 1/2 teaspoon fresh lemon juice, 1/2 teaspoon vinegar, and 3 drops rosemary essential oil. Dab onto your age spots with a cotton ball once or twice a day.
Take some green (not fully ripe) black walnuts and make a few incisions in the outer shell; rub the juice on the spots.
Apply some sandalwood paste to affected areas.
Prepare a mixture by adding 2-teaspoon tomato juice and 4 tablespoon buttermilk and apply on the face. Leave for 1/2 hour, and wash off. This is also a very effective home remedy.
Mix olive oil with equal quantity of vinegar and apply an hour before your bath.
